10 Song Lyrics To Help Parents Survive Until Bedtime

Do your kids just generally annoy you some days?  Well, mine definitely do.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love those tiny humans more than anything in the world, but there are those days I just can’t even!  These 10 song lyrics to help parents survive until bedtime, will help you to take a deep breath, and instead of counting to 10, sing a little melody under your breath (or through gritted teeth.)

10. “Y’all gonna make me lose my mind, up in here, up in here”

DMX said it best when he sang these lyrics.  As a mom, I have sang this song in my head more times than I choose to admit.  Kids can drive parents up the wall, as any loving parent knows.  Even if you don’t have kids, you have been around kids, and you have probably thought these song lyrics a time or two as you lovingly smile at the parents.

9. “Shut Up, Just Shut Up, Shut Up”

The Black Eyed Peas song “Shut Up” is exactly what so many of us wish we could say to our kids on a daily basis.  There is something so powerful about these two little words.   What is it about simply saying shut up, even in sarcasm, that makes us feel instant gratification?  The next time your child won’t stop screaming, just quietly sing this little tune in your head.

8.  “Take This Job and Shove It.  I ain’t Workin’ Here No More.”

David Allen Coe wrote the song “Take This Job and Shove It”  for the every day working man who was sick and tired of going to a job where there was no reward.  Sound like motherhood much?  Wouldn’t it feel so great to just be able to talk like this without there being any repercussions?  “Oh you hate dinner tonight?  I’m so sorry I didn’t make you chicken nuggets for the 380590394 time!”

7.  “Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm”

Have you ever been stuck in one of those never ending, one sided conversations with your kids?  You know, the kind where they start sounding like the teacher from Charlie Brown?  Although the theme song from Jeopardy would work just fine, this simple song lyric by Crash Test Dummies pretty much says exactly what I’m thinking by 6pm when my brain hurts too much to speak any more words.

6. “So You Had a Bad Day”

Daniel Powter’s song has been heard and sung so many times and I can’t seem to escape this song.  I have heard it in grocery stores, in my car, in commercials, and on tv shows.  Usually when I hear it I’m in the middle of one of my bad days and I’m thinking “dude you want to trade me lives for like 2.5 seconds?  I’ve got enough material over here for you to write 25 more songs about terrible horrible no good very bad days.

5. “Who Let the Dogs Out”

Have you ever had a dog that just keeps getting out of your house or fence?  Well, I have one of those dogs currently.  The dog will just get out the front door and take off like a speeding bullet and will not stop. As much as we love this little mutt, she is definitely a piece of work who, I swear, this song was written all about.  Most of the time it’s one of my kids who let her out because they have this special  talent for forgetting how to shut a door.  I’m not gonna lie…when speaking these lyrics to my kids, it’s more like the heavy metal rock version.

4. “And if you tell my heart, my achy breaky heart, he might blow up and kill this man”

Everyone has heard the Billy Ray Cyrus song “Achy Breaky Heart” at some point or another.  If you haven’t heard it, you are missing out my friend. It is definitely one catchy tune that is bound to have you singing it all day.  We can all probably remember that awesome mullet and those great stone washed jeans that will go down in history as one of the greatest styles to ever live. I cannot tell you how many times these lyrics have gone through my mind, and although I would definitely not “kill this man”, I have figuratively thought about killing the current situation I have been stuck in.  So, the next time your kids yell “I hate you” to you or one of your siblings, you may find this catchy tune just floating in your head.

3. “Things That Make You Go Hmm”

This song written by C & C Music Factory has definitely been a recurring theme in my mind on a daily basis.  When you walk into your child’s room and it looks like a tornado has gone through it, when your husband is late for dinner for the umpteenth time, when you realize the reason you are hungry is because you forgot to eat lunch, or when you wonder why you’re the only one who notices laundry needs to be folded, you may just think about this song.

2. “If I Could Turn Back Time”

Cher wrote the perfect song lyrics that would be appropriate in so many situations as a mom.  I have forgotten to be at an appointment, am always running late, and have yelled more times than I like to admit.  Why can’t we just turn back time?  That’s it…I’m making a time machine just for moms!  Who’s with me?

1. “So tell me what you want, what you really really want”

The Spice Girls “Wannabe” is a song lyric that is perfect for the motherhood.  Your toddler wants something, but you have no idea what it is, because they are making no sense.  Your 4 year old can’t make a choice to save his life.  Your husband is pouty and you have no energy to figure out what is wrong with your other “child.” JUST TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT!!!!! It would be so much easier on my life if I just knew what all you humans in my family are needing!

What song lyrics help you get through your day?  Of course, every day is not going to be stressful and crazy, but for the days that are, a little comedic relief goes a long way.

  1. DYING! OMG hilarious!! I text my husband early this afternoon and said I was SO Super-Momming it today! aaaaand then all hell broke loose and I wanted to kill both my children. LOL.

    1. Hahaha! I literally laughed out loud (LOL) at your comment. Girl I feel ya. Some days I rock this mom gig and other days I wave the white flag and pour me a glass of wine.

  2. Haha this is great! I have definitely sang a few of these in my head on more than one occasion. 😆

  3. Haha, what a fun post! I feel most of these on a daily basis!

  4. Oh my goodness, number ten all the way! LOL, I feel like that way a lot. Unfortunately, the lyrics that typically go through my head are from my kiddo’s cartoons, which don’t really help at all.

  5. Oh my goodness, hilarious!! Ad OH SO true!! So funny!! Thanks for the laughs this morning!

  6. Oh my goodness, this is me every night! My five year old is like the energizer bunny. I think most nights I fall asleep before she does. Thanks for the good laughs 🙂

  7. This is hilarious and so true!! I’m going to have to go find that DMX song, the edited version of course ;-), now so I can play it when I need to. One song I’m always singing to my girls is “Cry Me A River” by Justine Timberlake. With 3 daughters, there are more tears shed in my house that necessary.

    1. Oh my gosh yes! Cry me a river is a great one. I have 3 boys and I literally just told my 4 year old to stop crying. Ha!

  8. Ha! I feel a mom dance party happening this afternoon – my kids are going to think I’m crazy. CANNOT WAIT 🙂

  9. Hilarious, and so on point!

  10. I started laughing after I read your first song because I literally just sang that out to my son like a week ago… haha all of these are just too good and so fitting sometimes! Xo
