Making Lemonades from Lemons in Your Teaching Journey

In this blog post and on episode 259 of The Elementary Music Teacher Podcast, I’m taking a break from our usual topic-focused format to share a more personal story. Life can throw curveballs our way, and sometimes we have to adapt and make the best of unexpected situations. Join me on this journey as I reflect on my recent experiences and the valuable life lessons they’ve taught me.

Embracing Change and Unexpected Twists

My teaching journey took an unexpected turn earlier this year, and I want to share this story because I believe it holds valuable lessons for all of us. You see, I had been preparing to take on a virtual teaching role since March. It was a new challenge, and I was excited to dive into it headfirst. I’d been researching, planning, and even sharing snippets of my journey with you, my amazing listeners.

But then, in the second week of June, I received an email that turned my world upside down. The school where I was supposed to teach virtually decided not to open at all. It wasn’t just my music position that disappeared; the entire school simply wasn’t launching as they had promised. I’ll admit, I was frustrated and angry. After all, I had turned down two other positions in anticipation of this opportunity.

I found myself at a crossroads, not sure how to proceed. If you’ve ever been in a similar situation, you know how daunting the job search process can be. Scouring local school district websites, job boards, and social media groups for openings can be a tedious and time-consuming task. But I persevered, bookmarking job listings and keeping an eye out for opportunities.

Trusting the Journey and Seizing New Opportunities

After getting over the initial shock, I decided it was time to take action. I couldn’t let frustration and disappointment dictate my next steps. It was during this phase that I realized the impact I had through my podcast and online presence. Seeing music teachers from all over the world tuning in to my content was mind-boggling. When I started my business seven years ago, I had no idea where it would lead, but now I understood the significance of my journey.

However, I still missed being in the classroom. Balancing my business and family life was a priority, so any teaching position had to align with our needs. I began searching for openings in local schools, even though I didn’t think I’d find any in the middle of June. To my surprise, I discovered two positions: one in a public school about 30 minutes from my home and another in a private school just 20 minutes away.

Weighing Options and Making a Difficult Choice

I decided to interview for both positions, hoping to gain clarity on my next steps. But when both schools offered me a teaching position, the decision became even more challenging. It’s a situation that many of us can relate to: suddenly, the ball was in my court, and I had to choose between two promising opportunities.

The public school offered a full-time position, which aligned with my passion for teaching music in a public school setting. However, it came with additional commitments that would consume my evenings and weekends, potentially hindering my business.

On the other hand, the private school offered a part-time position teaching preschool through grade four, with incredible support and flexibility. They embraced my business endeavors and even sought my expertise in integrating technology. It felt like the perfect fit.

Lessons Learned and Takeaways for You

Ultimately, I chose the private school position, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. But what does my journey mean for you, dear listeners? I want to leave you with some key takeaways:

  • Embrace Change: Life rarely goes exactly as planned. Be open to change and adapt when necessary. Sometimes, the unexpected can lead to wonderful opportunities.
  • Listen to Your Heart: Trust your instincts and what feels right for you. My choice was about more than just a job; it was about aligning my career with my values and lifestyle.
  • Don’t Be Afraid to Evolve: Your career path may take unexpected turns, and that’s okay. Whether you’re a teacher or in any other profession, your journey may involve detours that lead to new growth and experiences.
  • Seek Support and Guidance: It’s okay to lean on your support system for advice. Discuss your options with family, friends, or mentors who can provide valuable insights.
  • Stay True to Your Passion: If you’re passionate about something, find a way to pursue it, even if it means juggling multiple responsibilities. Your enthusiasm and dedication will shine through.
  • Be Vulnerable: Sharing your struggles and uncertainties can inspire and resonate with others. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your community when you need guidance or simply to vent.

I hope my story serves as a reminder that life is a journey filled with unexpected twists and turns. Whether you’re facing lemons or sipping lemonade, remember that each experience contributes to your personal and professional growth. Keep your eyes open for opportunities, stay true to your values, and trust in the path that unfolds before you.
